CHAPTER 18

JOEL

"Still," I say as we exit the elevator onto my building floor, "I can't believe you convinced me to go to Applebee's."

"I can't believe I had to convince you to even go to Applebee's," Clayton replies with passionate hand motions. "It's a predictably standard American fair, every single time. Plus," he hiccups, "I love the cocktails."

"Standard is right," I say. "And by ‘standard’ I mean 'mediocre at best.'"

Clayton gasps. "You take that back! I saw your eyes while you were eating those chicken tenders. They. Gave. You. Life!"

"I will admit no such thing," I say, very sure of myself. After a moment of silence, I sigh. "I swear this hallway gets longer⸺"

"Every single time, I know, right?"

We're laughing hysterically as we tumble into the apartment.

"Daddy!" Bella chimes.

"ClayClay!" José sings.

"Looks like you two had a good date night," Lily says, peeking over her laptop and a pile of textbooks on the dining table.

"And you have bio-chem dread written all over your face," I say, poking out my bottom lip.

"You know my face too well, then," she says, closing her laptop. “And now that you two are here, you can entertain the kiddos while I get some real studying done in my room."

"Ten-four, captain," Clayton says with a salute.

I can’t help but smile at the casual ease Lily and Clayton have slid into over the past few weeks. They don’t talk much over their study sessions and breakfast circuses, but they’ve built a comfortable familiarity that is nothing but fondness.

She gathers up her books and computer and heads down the hallway, kids dancing around her in their brightly colored tutus.

"Oh!" she says, spinning around. "Your friend dropped by while you were out."

"Oh?" I say. "I wasn't expecting anyone. Who?"

"It was kind of an odd-ball name. Last name Rosa?"

Clayton grabs my shoulder and I stiffen. "Zeke? Zeke Rosa?"

"That's it!" she says. "He asked if he could come in and wait for you to get back, but you both had just left and I was like, no I don't know you, obviously."

"Did he know the kids were here?" Clayton asks.

My hands tighten around the wheels of my chair.

"Well, they were just doing their thing," she says, waving towards them. They were playing leap from across the living room now. "I'm sure he heard them." Her brow furrows. "Why do you two look worried?"

Clayton and I glance at each other. Somehow we both know we are instantly stone cold sober.

Lily walks back over to the table, slams down her books and computer, and puts a hand on her hip. "Start talkin', boys."

I explain everything. Or at least everything I know. Clayton adds a few details about his and Maddox's childhood friendship and eventual dramatic betrayal, as needed.

"You had a sketchy dude following you around and you didn't think to tell me?" she says, her eyes drilling into my soul.

"In hindsight I realize that was stupid," I say. "But in my defense, he stopped tailing me after the Halloween fundraiser over two weeks ago. I haven't seen him since.
